When Jennifer Aniston fell in love with this 1970′s house on a hillside overlooking Beverly Hills, it took the woman who owned it seven months to agree to sell it. Eventually the actress got the house and immediatly she began to work on it with interior designer Stephen Shadley. As Jennifer puts it, the house “vibrates with the love that created it”.
The designer has collaborated with Diane Keaton on two of her residences in Southern California and one in Arizona and with Woody Allen on the interiors of his apartment in New York City.
Aniston and Shadley created an Asian, even Balinese, feel for the single-level house.The actress calls the house Ohana, a reference to the Hawaiian idea of extended family. It is the first large residence que has worked on for herself.
Jennifer wanted from the beginning a zen like retreat but, at the same time, with a sense of drama for entertainment. Mission accomplished!
There is a tropical feeling througout the house. Outside, there is a bridge spanning over a koi pond. Inside, the palette was drawn from the texture and richness of Brazilian cumaru, which was used for eaves, floors, and walls. Much of the wood was harvested from fallen trees, in order to create an eco-friendly environment. Extensive solar panels were also installed on the roof.
“The house has a rather glamorous, old-fashioned Hollywood quality,” she says. “I can just imagine the Rat Pack stopping by; someone is playing the piano, and people are laughing in the next room.” Indeed, there is a piano, a 1960′s Sauter, which is frequently in use.
The dining room can seat 24, who gather beneath Alison Berger’s Rain chandelier, composed of illuminated hand-blown crystal pendants. A 1920s Thai gong calls diners to partake at the long walnut table.
Jennifer Aniston’s favorite room is, however, the kitchen, with its pizza oven and wine room. She fondly remembers sitting on her parents’ kitchen counter as a kid, talking and laughing. She still finds that the kitchen is the place she ends up most often.
The master suite’s walls are filled with photographs taken by Mark Shaw for Lifemagazine depicting models being fitted backstage at a Pierre Balmain couture show in 1954.Their intimate quality seduced the actress. The room, with a platform bed designed by Shadley with a motorized television lift at the foot and a spa bath with a soaking tub, opens onto a private garden designed by Coral Browning and Marcello Villano, who were responsible for the lush landscaping throughout the property.
