The designer and TV personality, Jeremiah Brent, transformed an old coach house on his property into a dreamy home office.

For most people, the words “office” and “relaxation” rarely frequent the same sentence. When it came to creating a brand new work space on his Los Angeles property, Jeremiah Brent’s top priority was to make working from home a meditative experience.  And if anyone can concoct the perfect balance between peacefulness and productivity, it’s this bi-coastal design powerhouse.

One half of TLC’s “Nate & Jeremiah By Design” and the founder of his self-named interior design firm, Brent’s career surprisingly started in the fashion world. Working under Rachel Zoe, he quickly realized he had “more of an interest in the sofas that the models were sitting on, than the actual models themselves.” Since launching his firm, he’s opened up two offices — in LA and New York — both of which have a serene, earthy vibe that makes for a calm work setting. It’s no surprise that his home office is an extension of that aesthetic.

Originally a coach house just off of the main estate, the private office space wasn’t exactly in tip-top shape when Brent started renovating. “It’s such a luxury to have the space to work from home, but inside was just awful,” he laughs. “It used to be a talent studio, so it had all these weird stages and sconces with little hands on them…it was just dark and brutal.”

The only way to start on this project, according to Brent, was by gutting the entire space. From the floors to the lighting, it all had to go. “I really wanted to crack the space open; the place where I find real joy is in the sunshine, so emphasizing light was a big focus of mine,” he says. “I think of myself as California modern, and I’m hugely inspired by nature. Every color I used in the office is from the outside world.”

There was even a small, unused patio off the side of the coach house that needed revamping. He installed custom glass panels that open onto the outdoor space and add an element of modernity to the room. “Now it feels like I work in a treehouse. It lets in so much light, it makes for a really relaxing work area,” he says.

Brent is a dedicated vintage lover, with an affinity for texture — and a lot of it. He curated the office with beautiful wooden furniture, stunning lighting, and decorative objects that make him feel at ease. “When buying vintage, it’s important to choose pieces that you feel like you’ve already owned for years,” he says.

Although comfort is the overarching theme of the workspace, there is no shortage of functionality. From a communal seating area designed for brainstorming to plenty of lighting and counter space, Brent curated every design element with office life in mind.

“When it comes to homes, I always try to create space for the moments I imagine people having in those homes, and the same goes for any workspace,” he says. “I always want there to be room for people to connect. That is so important, especially in an office.” Because what better way to relax at work than by slowing down, chatting with friends, and taking in your surroundings?
